I like Tom Petty and I think those songs were pretty good...but did they sound weird to anyone else? Like they had some weird effect on them or were recorded poorly or something?

I noticed that, too. It seems like there's a "lo-fi" ( and yes, I know that phrase is a good 10 years old now ) thing going on that's finally hit mainstream artists. "Make it sound gritty...make it sound dirty". Well, it just sound like ass.
I was listening to the latest Baseball Project album today...good tunes, sounds like garbage.
Right? Like you just can't hear the song under all that. And I'd like to be able to hear the song. I get it a bit stylistically...but it just doesn't go with all styles, and I don't think it should be used as much as it is.
