I'm really liking the rotating guest hosts and April played a lot of stuff I really enjoyed/had not heard before! Plus I think she is super charming and funny and if you aren't listening to Go Baysdie! you should be.

ok, at the risk of sounding like an *******.. I wish Rachel, er, uh, I mean April, would have played stuff that wasn't so obscure. 1979 is such a great year with such great music!!
I tend to agree with Smedley. Having said that...she's such a die-hard for that era/genre of music that my hope is that she brings more than that to the show. And I think she will.
Personally, I liked hearing a lot of the stuff she played. I haven't heard Gang Of Four in a long time. And playing stuff from that era reminds me of how much "alternative" stuff out there is just a pale imitation ( the bass-y, "angular" stuff ) of what came before.
Oh...and I found it amusing that she played 2 songs ( "You Say You Don't Love Me" by the Buzz****s & "Grinding Halt" by The Cure ) that I discovered back in the early 80's on compilation records ( An IRS Records sampler & the "Times Square" soundtrack, respectively ).
So um... should we all do a thread for our birth year?

Yeah you make a good point, MonoStereo. If she brings in nothing but that type of music every time it might get a little stale. But then again she's only on once every 4 weeks. I think Pat has a good mix of hosts that are all bringing very different tastes to the show. The biggest draw of the show for me was always the dynamic between Gary and Pat's tastes. The classic and newer mix (plus they worked really well as a "comedy team" in my opinion.) My biggest fear is that Pat has a host that brings in the exact same type of music that he does.
Really don't think she will...birth year is hard, if you only like one type of music from that era that is very understandable, especially when it seemed like a very important movement and era for her. She already mentioned some of her other favorites on the show and it wasn't all Post Punk. Plus she had well over 45 songs picked out, I think she saw what the guys were enjoying and went down that road. I really liked all of the music she picked.
I think Pat did a great job picking out the 4 new cohosts, just like Gary they have some overlap with Pat in a few regards but each of them brings something new and fun.

Okay, so I would like to point out if it has not been already: Ylvis owes A LOT!!!! to Sparks (and so do a lot of musicians but really Ylvis, say thank you). The Monochrome Set oddly made me think of The Squirrel Nut Zippers. It's funny but The Rolling Stones reminded me of The Rolling Stones, and yes I just typed that. Pete Townsend is one of my favorite song writers, and I agree that Squeeze is one of the most under-rated bands of their time.
I really knew quite a bit of April's music, mostly thanks to my wife who was very much into the post-punk era.
April mentions the idea that it isn't as acceptable for girls to be so heavily into certain types of music, and Pat chimed in with the idea that if you like someone who likes something, you should continue to like that person. I will take that a step further: one of the (many) reasons I married my wife is because I explained who I am (a heavy metal singer quite frankly) and what that might mean. She accepted that, and though there has been tension at times, she gets mad at me if I am not in a band, it's part of who I am. Out of that I have watched friends who were pulled away from the music world (including the band that I was closest to the next step with in the 90's) by women who met them while they were in bands, and fell in love with a musician: who then turned around and told those same men after love had been established that being a musician wasn't good enough, and thus the men they fell in love with were not good enough. It is such a strange phenomena, and I am sorry that happens to you April, for music is such an integral part of who I am I can't imagine not having it be a part of me.
If I had to go 1979, I always have to throw Priest out there. Hell Bent for Leather came out in 1979 as well as Unleashed in the East. Pretty good year for a Priest fan.
If I had to go with my birth year then I would go with a Jimmy Pardo favorite that he put in my head recently (about a month ago) and I can't get it gone: "Make Me Smile" by Chicago form Chicago II.
Well I know I don't show up much, but hi everybody.

You make a really good point, & I'm in a similar boat. One of the reasons I'm still with the same person for 22 years is that she's also into music. Maybe not to the degree I am, but she gets it.
I can only add that April, Christy, Mike and Murray are all super excited to be part of the show and their enthusiasm has made it really fun for me as well. As far as overlap goes I would say that will probably be most evident when Christy and I are together since we definitely like the same genres of music.
