Talking here about great albums that came out of the blue from bands that had a real decline in quality, or that you had stopped following/caring about.
From 1994-ish until a few years back, I was a HUGE fan of the Supersuckers. Bought all the records, would see them live every time they came thru KC, hell - I was even in their friggin' fan club. But their last album ( "Get It Together" ) underwhelmed me. And the band's now down to 2 original members ( out of 4 ) . So if I had to rank 'em, I dunno if they'd even make my Top 20 bands at this point. Which is a damn shame.
BUT - they just released a new record ( "Get The Hell" ), that's one of those "back to basics/their roots" deals. It's in the mail to me now. I sure hope it doesn't suck.
A good example of what I'm talking about would be Urge Overkill's "Rock And Roll Submarine", which came out a couple years ago. They hadn't released an album since 1995, & I didn't have a lot of reason to think this comeback record would be all that great. But it WAS - maybe even their most consistent album ever.

I lost interest with them around then too (Although Staring at the Sun is a great song from Pop.) But I think I actually started to lose interest a little after Achtung Baby came out. I think my expectations for that album were off the charts and I know everyone loves that record but I was a little underwhelmed by it. And they still have never really gotten me back. A song here and there I like but none of their albums have really done much for me.
my love for U2 will never equal what it was from Boy through Joshua Tree, but I do like them still.
me too. they played at the meadowlands for a full week on the first leg of the Joshua Tree tour. I went the opening night had seats about 5 rows from stage, then went the last night of the week and had seats in the 100s. both shows were insane.
I'm a big Jimmy Cliff fan and I kinda lost interest in the stuff he was doing in the 90s/00s…. but the record he put out with Tim Armstrong from Rancid, "Rebirth" in 2012, is an awesome record. Caught him the last time he came through NYC last year and man, that dude can still put on a show. Worth checking out if ya like Jimmy.
I've listened to that new Supersuckers record that inspired this thread a couple times now, & I'm happy to report that I like it. It's not on par with their greatest ( not that I was expecting that ), but it's much better than I expected.
So...maybe a "half" comeback. Maybe I'll see them on tour for it.
Oh - & I'm also enjoying that Jimmy Cliff record! Been too long since I'd bought some reggae.
I still buy reggae but I find the majority of it these days is older stuff I didn't have or know about. But that Jimmy Cliff record is really good. He put out a live one last year that's also good. I wonder if Tim Armstrong is going to be involved next time. I think he had a big hand in making that record as good as it is….. glad my recommendation panned out for ya.
