I have to admit, this episode was a little depressing for me. I was in high school in the late 80's, and my friends and I were all into the Kinks more than the Beatles, the Stones or the Who. We saw them at Poplar Creek in Chicago in '87 with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and the crowd was huge and enthusiastic. I just assumed that the Kinks were just as popular as those other bands in the world at large.

Now I find out that they aren't! As they guys said on the show a bunch of times, there is just no good reason for that.

One cool story about the concert: the Kinks played two or three encores. There was extended applause after the last one, but then the venue lights went up and the crowd said "Awwww." But then the lights went back out and they did another encore. Fake out encore! Also, one of the songs (I can't remember which one) was staged like a music video with a story line and props. Very cool.

That does seem like an usually cool concert.

The only "fake" type of encore I've ever seen is an old gag the Supersuckers used to do. At the end of the regular set, they would announce that it was dumb to leave the stage & make the crowd beg them to come back. So the whole band would turn their backs to the audience & pretend like they weren't there. After people cheered enough, they'd all turn around like they were gone for 5 minutes. Never failed to make me chuckle.

Lately all these one band/artist episodes has kind of made me lose my interest in Rock Solid. I've been listening since day one.... actually I think I've shared on here before I caught Matt, Pat and Gary on the Doug Loves Movies episode they were on to launch/promote Rock Solid. It was the last podcast I listened to religiously. But lately I've been passing on episodes. I have about 10 I've yet to listen to. It's still nice hearing "the gang" when I do tune in but it just doesn't feel like appointment listening for me anymore.

The "band" episodes can be rough depending on how much you like the band in question. Like recently I was not really looking forward to the Pink Floyd show, but there was enough humor in there to keep me entertained. I just tend to hit that "fast forward 15 seconds" button on the iPod a lot on those shows when I'm not on board with the actual music content.

I like the band episodes for the most part. I will admit turning off the Zappa episode with FRank Biernut.. just couldnt get into that one at all.

That one absolutely confirmed for me how much I hate the music of Zappa. Ha ha...
