This is the first in what will hopefully be many Artists of the Week. The Artist of the Week is where someone chooses a band or a musician, and everybody else posts their favorite songs and/or albums by that artist. Or, if the artist is someone who isn't exactly YouTube-friendly, we can just have a nice little chat about them. Our likes, our dislikes, where we felt they went off, when we felt they came back, related stories, and so on and so forth. This week's artist is...
Deep Purple
1. "Above and Beyond" - Now What?! - This is from Deep Purple's newest album, which is amazing. It's also one of two songs dedicated to the late Jon Lord. Gillan's voice has held up pretty well considering all the screaming he's done.
2. "Burn" - Burn - The Coverdale/Hughes era of the band wasn't their biggest, but they did have some fantastic songs. The entire Burn album, actually, is one of my favorites by Deep Purple. Title track just erupts right off the record.
3. "Child in Time" - Deep Purple in Rock - Maybe the greatest rock scream of all time done by Ian Gillan in this song. Imagine building up to an earth-shattering crescendo for five minutes, then going all the way back down and starting over. Then finishing higher than before. Yeah, it's that good.

Very cool...because this is definitely a band I could use some educatin' on.
I know the hits obviously - & was in radio when they had their comeback in the 80's. So I'm familiar with some of that era.
And I know people like Martin Popoff are still on board with the more recent stuff - which I know NOTHING about. So I'm gonna check that top YouTube out first.
Ah yes, "The House of Blue Light" album. I can't say I've listened to it. And yeah, definitely turn your ears to the new album. The one before it, "Rapture of the Deep" is also pretty good.

I'm not saying that. I love the "Perfect Strangers" album. It's just that I've never listened to "House of Blue Light." Now that I think of it, I haven't listened to a lot of the late 80s and 90s Deep Purple. Me thinks it's time to go spelunking into that time period of the band.

Ah...gotcha. I would say that "House" is definitely a sister album to "PS". But maybe not up to that level. It's been years since I've heard the whole thing.
I have had these lyrics stuck in my head since The House of Blue Light came out...

I like Deep Purple quite a bit, and this song is really a good one. I see the video up there somewhere so I won't repost it.
